KOROR, Palau—A delegation from Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, recently visited Palau to deepen people-to-people connections and bolster longstanding relations.

Led by Mr. Noritoshi Murata, a member of the Hokkaido Legislative Assembly, the group met with Palauan officials and visited various agencies, including Palau High School. They expressed their desire to strengthen the bonds between the two regions, citing the historic visit of Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko to Palau in 2015.

Mr. Murata highlighted the shared history between Hokkaido and Palau, particularly in the area of fisheries cooperation. He mentioned past student exchanges disrupted by COVID-19 and expressed hope for their resumption.

The delegation concluded their visit with a trip to Peleliu before departing Palau.
