The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS YAHAGI made a port call to Palau from June 15 to June 18, 2025, as part of its mission under the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2025 (IPD25).
To promote goodwill and cultural exchange, the crew of JS YAHAGI engaged in a cultural exchange program on June 16 in collaboration with Maris Stella School. During the event, the crew performed a lively Wa-daiko (traditional Japanese drum) presentation, captivating the students with the rhythm and energy of the performance. Students were invited to try the Wa-daiko, gaining hands-on experience with this iconic aspect of Japanese culture.
The event also featured a mini “Undokai” (Japanese-style sports event), where crew members and students teamed up and enjoyed games such as tug-of-war, jump roping, and relay races. This light-hearted and spirited activity encouraged joyful interaction and gave the students a unique glimpse into Japanese traditions.
Later that same day, one of the JMSDF crew members also had the opportunity to join a Judo training session with Palau Judo team, expected to compete in the Pacific Mini Games. The visiting crew member participated in the practice, shared techniques, and offered tips during the session—further enriching the cultural and athletic exchange between Japan and Palau.
On June 17, JS YAHAGI welcomed students, faculty, and parents of Maris Stella School aboard for a guided ship tour. This opportunity allowed the visitors to learn about the mission and operations of the JS YAHAGI, as well as meet the crew. The tour concluded with a group photo and a small commemorative gift for each student from the ship’s crew, creating lasting memories for all involved.
The Embassy of Japan extends its sincere gratitude to the people of Palau for their continued friendship and hospitality. This visit exemplifies the strong bonds between Japan and Palau, and the mutual commitment to fostering cultural understanding and goodwill through youth and community engagement.
