SUVA, Fiji – Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Palauan Minister of State Gustav Aitaro met on February 11th in Suva, Fiji, reaffirming the “tokubetsu” (special) relationship between their nations and pledging closer cooperation on regional issues.

The 25-minute meeting, held on the sidelines of the PALM 5th Ministerial Interim Meeting, highlighted the long-standing ties between the two Pacific allies. Kamikawa underscored the importance of maintaining and strengthening a “free and open international order based on the rule of law,” while acknowledging the need to address the specific needs of Pacific Island nations in light of changing regional dynamics.

Both ministers expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and agreed to work even more closely towards the upcoming PALM 10 meeting. Aitaro welcomed Japan’s continued support for Palau, including a symbolic gift of Kanazawa gold leaf offered by Kamikawa in solidarity with areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
