KOROR, Palau (Aug. 4, 2026) – A visit by Japan’s parliamentary Vice Minister of Defence brought Palau’s security cooperation and wartime history into focus as Hon. Yoshida Shinji made his first overseas trip since taking office.
For Palauans, the visit touched both present-day concerns and shared history. Yoshida paid a courtesy call on Hon. Jennifer Olegeriil, minister of justice, where the two exchanged views on strengthening security cooperation in Palau. Their discussion pointed to the continuing importance of cooperation in matters affecting the country’s safety and maritime protection.
He later visited the Joint Operation Center and PSS KEDAM at the Bureau of Maritime Security and Fish & Wildlife Protection building, locations tied to Palau’s efforts to safeguard its waters and enforce protection measures. Yoshida also offered flowers and prayers at the Former Navy Cemetery in Koror, a respectful gesture at a place connected to the island nation’s wartime past and remembrance.
On Peleliu, Yoshida paid his respects at the Monument for the War Dead of the Western Pacific to honor Japanese soldiers who died during the war. He also met with the United States Marine Corps and visited sites where efforts are being made to collect the remains of those who lost their lives during the war.
