Special Prosecutor goes after drunk drivers

July 5, 2015 (Koror) Court sentenced Merii C. Jefferson to 30 days in jail, a 2-year suspended sentence and 5-year probation as result of her driving recklessly while under the influence of alcohol on June 13, 2015 and causing serious injuries to three victims, (2 adults and 1 child).

Ms. Jefferson was charged earlier by the Office of Special Prosecutor on counts of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering in the First Degree, Negligent Injury in the First Degree, Negligent Injury in the Second Degree, Speeding and Improper Passing/Overtaking. Ms. Jefferson pled guilty to all counts.
The charges stemmed from a severe car collision that cause serious injuries to three victims at Ngerbeselch, Airai, in front of Bem Ermii Burger hut. According to earlier reports, Ms. Jefferson, who was under the influence of alcohol, was speeding and passing vehicles when she the vehicle she was driving ran into another vehicle that coming from the opposite lane. The accident caused significant injuries to the three people in the other vehicle.
Ms. Jefferson’s husband, Rull Debedebek who was also charged for his conduct related to the same incident, had pled guilty to Hindering Prosecution in the Second Degree on April 29, 2016. He was sentence to 1-year suspended prison sentence, community service and is subject to a suspension from the Bureau of Public Safety without pay.
Both were ordered by court to pay restitution to the victims in this case. [/restrict]
