On December 7, 2021, the Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries an the Environment (MAFE), Steven Victor, and Chief Representative of JICA Palau office, Ryutaro Kobayashi, signed the Record of Discussion (R/D) for The Project: Forming Good Practices of Islands-Type Blue Economy in Palau.
The purpose of this project is to develop and conceptualize best practices for island-type blue economy. The main objectives of this project is to increase the profitability of offshore fishing by commercializing the fisheries and improving its business model, improving domestic distribution system for fishers and producers, improving fisheries resource management and conservation of coastal eco-system, establishing and improving collaboration between fisheries and tourism sector and finally, capturing and sharing lessons learned from the project to other countries.
According to the Record of Discussion, the project is scheduled to begin in January 2022 and will continue until 2025.
