KOROR, Palau (July 16, 2026) — Sonsorol’s Benedict Kintaro exploded out of the blocks and never looked back, claiming gold in the men’s masters 35-and-over 60-meter sprint on Thursday during Day 5 of the 2026 Belau Games athletics competition.

Kintaro crossed the line in 8.32 seconds at the Belau Track and Field Oval, holding off a fast-closing field of veteran sprinters to secure the masters title.

Peleliu’s Ainer Kebekol finished second in 8.54 seconds, while Sonsorol teammate Icely Kurterbis took bronze in 8.69 seconds, giving Sonsorol two spots on the podium.

In a race where starts and acceleration often determine the outcome, Kintaro seized an early advantage and maintained his pace through the finish line. Kebekol and Kurterbis battled stride for stride for the remaining medal positions, with less than four-tenths of a second separating the top three finishers.

The result added to a strong evening for Sonsorol, which continued to collect points and medals across the athletics program.

Beyond the medals, the race highlighted the importance of the Belau Games masters division, which provides veteran athletes an opportunity to remain active in competitive sports while continuing to represent their states on the national stage.

The masters category has become one of the most inspiring features of the Games, allowing older athletes to extend their competitive careers, showcase their experience and fitness, and serve as role models for younger competitors entering the sport.

Athletics competition at the Belau Track and Field Oval continues through July 18 as states battle for medals in the final days of the 2026 Belau Games.
