The Ngerkebesang Hamlet High Chief title now belongs to Johnny Debedebk Esebei, installed in a feast attended by all 10 members of the Ngarameketii Council of Chiefs. Koror, Palau — On Thursday, June 26, the Koror State House of Traditional Leaders (HOTL) issued a press release announcing the appointment of a new Ngerkebesang Hamlet High Chief, Espangel Johnny Debedebk Esebei.

The release said an installation feast was held for the new Espangel and that all 10 members of the Ngarameketii Council of Chiefs, including the Hamlet Chiefs — Rubekul Kldeu — attended.

Issued by Ibedul Alexander Merep and HOTL, the announcement said the chiefs “are very pleased with what has transpired. Furthermore, this appointment will bring HOTL closer to full membership.”

The press release also noted that only one chief title remains vacant: the Ngerchemai hamlet chief, Iyechaderchemai. That vacancy followed the passing of the late Iyechaderchemai Elia Yobech on May 29.

Observers share that many chief titles within HOTL are currently contested by at least two contenders, making this press release an interesting declaration.

According to the announcement, the appointment of the new Espangel and the near-complete HOTL membership brings joy as it coincides with the construction of the new Bai ra Meketii. The multi-story building project to replace the old Bai ra Meketii, was initiated by former governor Franco Gibbons, and will house the offices of HOTL and its staff.
