KOROR, Palau (Island Times) — Speed and precision defined the women’s 60-meter final Thursday evening as Koror’s Peoria Koshiba sprinted to victory in one of the closest races of Day 5 at the 2026 Belau Games athletics competition.

Koshiba crossed the finish line in 9.62 seconds, narrowly defeating Ngaraard’s Taina Yano, who finished second in 9.70 seconds. Airai’s Kulie Rengulbai secured third place in 9.72 seconds, leaving just one-tenth of a second separating the top three finishers.

The short-distance sprint delivered one of the most competitive races of the evening at the Belau Track and Field, where every fraction of a second proved decisive. With only 60 meters to determine the champion, the athletes relied on explosive starts and quick acceleration, leaving little room for error.

Koshiba maintained a slight advantage throughout the race and held off a late challenge from Yano, while Rengulbai remained within striking distance until the finish. The narrow margins reflected the depth of competition among the finalists and underscored the increasing level of sprinting talent represented by several states competing in this year’s Belau Games.

For Koror, the victory added another gold medal to its athletics campaign, while Ngaraard and Airai each earned valuable podium finishes that contributed to their respective medal tallies.

Although separated by only hundredths of a second, each of the top three athletes demonstrated consistency and composure under pressure, turning the final into one of the evening’s most anticipated events.

The women’s 60-meter dash highlighted the competitive spirit that has characterized the athletics tournament, with athletes from across Palau continuing to challenge one another in pursuit of Belau Games medals. Competition at the Belau Track and Field Oval continues through July 18 with additional track and field events scheduled over the coming days.
