Heavy rains caused a landslide on the west side of a compact road between the intersections of Aimeliik and Ngatpang in Babeldaob two nights ago. The Palau Bureau of Public Safety announced the landslide on its social media page and through Eco Paradise FM at 7:50 pm that night. The post was widely shared on social media.
The landslide blocked access on the west coast to Koror for most states, Ngardmau, Ngeremlengui, and Ngatpang. Early, a public announcement was made to divert traffic to the east side of Babeldaob island.
According to Public Safety Chief Mekreos, crews cleared the landslide yesterday. They used a fire truck to spray away mud from the road.
PPUC Public Information Officer Isebong said the landslide did not damage any power poles or disrupt power lines.
Chief Mekreos reported that this was the only landslide as of yesterday. However, with the ongoing heavy rainfall, more landslides are possible and the public is urged to be alert and to report any landslides by calling 775-4147.
