Northern Reef States, Kayangel and Ngerchelong partnered up with the national government to forge a more effective surveillance and enforcement program that reduces illegal activities within the states and national jurisdiction in the northern Palau. [restrict]
Vice President and Minister of Justice Raynold B. Oilouch, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment & Tourism Umiich Sengebau, Governor Browny Salvador of Ngarchelong State and Governor Midas Ngiracheluolu of Kayangel States signed a Memorandum of Understanding on April 21, 2017 to establish the cooperation between the parties.
The MOU seek to improve enforcement skills, coordination between state and national personnel and build sufficient and practical regulatory and institutional capacity for sustainable management of the Protected Areas Network (PAN) and fisheries of the Northern Reef.
It further states the collaboration will act as guidance to the further development of a national enforcement process and capacity to support the PAN and Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS).
