4 Charges Dismissed
Koror, Palau September 14, 2017: Leon Remengesau, Director of the Bureau of Marine Resources (“BMR”), a part of the Ministry of Natural Resources, entered a plea of guilty to charges of Assault and Misconduct in Public Office before Judge Lourdes Materne of the Palau Supreme Court, Trial Division. Four other charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor against Mr. Remengesau were dismissed.
As a result of an agreement reached between the parties, Mr. Remengesau will be on probation for 3 years, pay Jacob Timarong $32 in restitution for medical bills and comply with the usual mandatory conditions of probation.
The charges arose from a dispute between Mr. Remengesau and Jacob Timarong, an employee of the BMR. Mr. Remengesau and Mr. Timarong are also very close, lifelong friends. Mr. Remengesau deeply regrets his actions and is thankful that his friend, Mr. Timarong, was not seriously injured and required no hospitalization.
Mr. Remengesau is further grateful to the court for accepting his plea and looks forward to putting this unfortunate incident behind him and continuing his important work for the people of Palau as Director of Marine Resources. [/restrict]
