The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environmental (MAFE) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed the Final Minutes of Meeting for an upcoming fruit fly project.

With the Minutes of Meeting signed, the fruit fly project titled “Project on the Development of a Fruit Fly Control System for Promoting Fruit Cultivation and Marketing. Implementation period beginning April 2024. This 3-year project will be led by the Bureau of Environment, MAFE, as an implementing agency, and will include cooperating agencies and partners such as the Bureau of Agriculture, MAFE, Division of Biosecurity, Ministry of Finance, State Governments, and Palau Community College.

The project’s overall goal is to increase supply of domestic fruit through medium to long term fruit fly control. With JICA’s assistance, the aim is to establish a fruit fly control and monitoring system, provide effective fruit fly control measures on target fruits, provide models for fruit cultivation and marketing through target farmers, develop a strategy for promoting fruit cultivation and marketing, and lastly develop fruit fly control policies.
