September 13, 2017 (Koror, Palau) Twenty-two contested land cases underwent mediation after Land Court resumed processing land claims in June.

In three months, seventeen of these cases that underwent mediation were fully resolved meaning that all claims and disputes were settled.  Two were partially resolved meaning that some disputes were withdrawn and others resolved and three remained unresolved.

The cases referred to mediation were from Ngarchelong and Ngaraard. Eleven were from Ngarchelong and eleven were from Ngaraard. All cases from Ngaraard were settled while in Ngarchelong, two were partially resolved, three remained unresolved and the rest of the claims were resolved.

Senior Land Court Judge congratulates the active mediators for their successful work in helping to move cases along much quicker.

The Land Court’s authority to adjudicate land claims expired on August 11, 2016.  The authority was renewed about seven months later when the President signed the proper legislation on April 13, 2017.  The Land Court began processing the pending land claims anew, including scheduling cases for mediation where appropriate.
