Palau issue warning of contaminated food product

Ministry of Health & Human Services issued a food safety warning yesterday to the public advising them not to eat Jif Peanut Butter with Lot code numbers 1274425 and 2140425.

According to MHHS, the products could cause health issues due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Director of Public Health, Sherlyn Madraisau said that they received the FDA food alert informing them that Palau has batches that could be contaminated.  Madraisau said that the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) team has recalled the products from the big stores and now scouring the small retail stores.

Salmonella, according to the advisory, is a bacteria that can grow on food and when eaten, can cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach aches.  The effect of the infection on young children, the elderly, or people with weak immune systems can be serious and even deadly.

The health advisory said to contact a health provider if you experience any of the above symptoms and inform them of the food you have consumed.

“It is important to be well informed of food safety practices and to regularly read food labels and expiration dates to protect your health,” reminds MHHS Department of Environmental Health.
