President Surangel Whipps Jr. emphasized the urgent need to combat diabetes in Palau, noting that “over 50% of Palauans have diabetes or prediabetes,” during the signing of a proclamation for National Diabetes Day.

The 2023 Hybrid Survey and Community Health Assessment, conducted by the Ministry of Health and Human Services, reveals that 30.5% of Palauans are either diagnosed with or self-report having diabetes, while an additional 36% are classified as prediabetic. Contributing factors include non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and unhealthy lifestyle choices. The report also highlights that 42% of adult Palauans are obese, based on BMI measurements, and 33% are overweight.

Diabetes and other NCDs, such as heart disease and cancer, have significant impacts on individuals and communities, Whipps said.

World Diabetes Day, observed annually on November 14, raises awareness about the global diabetes epidemic. This year’s theme, Diabetes and Wellness, focuses on promoting health and well-being.

In a press conference this week, Whipps called for a collective effort to address the issue. “It takes a community to tackle diabetes,” he said, emphasizing the importance of public awareness and proactive measures.

The proclamation encourages Palauan’s to recognize the causes and effects of diabetes, which can be triggered by poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and other factors. However, Whipps stressed that diabetes is preventable and manageable through regular health screenings, a balanced diet, and an active lifestyle. (By: L.N. Reklai)
