Koror, Palau — On November 26, the Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Reliant opened its doors to the public, offering tours that highlighted its critical role in enhancing regional security and disaster response capabilities. The tour, led by Naval Liaison Officer BJ Glover, provided attendees with a firsthand look at the vessel’s extensive features and operational capacity.
The ADV Reliant’s visit to Palau is part of Australia’s broader commitment to support Pacific Island nations. The vessel is designed for a variety of missions, including humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and maritime surveillance. During the tour, Glover emphasized the ship’s versatility, stating, “The opportunities are endless,” as it can accommodate heavy lifting operations with a deck area of 1,000 square meters and a crane capable of lifting up to 150 tons.
The Australian Embassy in Palau also shared insights via social media about the ADV Reliant’s ongoing mission. In a Facebook post, they noted that the vessel aims to bolster Australia’s capacity to respond to regional challenges while providing essential support for local events such as the upcoming Pacific Mini Games 2025. The embassy highlighted that this visit marked the last stop in a series of engagements across the Pacific region, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to its partnerships.
Ambassador Richelle Turner remarked on the significance of the vessel’s presence in Palau. “It’s a whole-of-government approach positioned throughout the Pacific,” she said. “Palau is the lucky last stop, and this event allows us to showcase our disaster management capabilities.” She further expressed optimism for future collaborations, indicating that next time the ADV Reliant visits Palau, they will reach out earlier to identify specific needs from local partners.
The ADV Reliant is not just a military asset; it also represents a vital link in Australia’s efforts to enhance regional resilience against climate change and other non-traditional threats. As Glover noted during the tour, “This trip is about showing capabilities for people to have a better understanding” of how Australia can assist its Pacific neighbors.
The vessel’s operational history includes previous engagements across several Pacific nations, where it has provided crucial support during crises. With a crew capacity of 60 and current personnel onboard numbering 27, the ADV Reliant is poised for its next mission to Papua New Guinea after concluding its activities in Palau.
