Two new publications unveiled this week contribute significantly to Palau’s historical record, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of Palauans during the early colonial periods.

The two-volume set, published by Mandy Etpison and Dr. Constanze Dupont, includes Palau in Photos, a photo album featuring images from 1875 to 1915, and Palau in Europe, a catalog of Palauan artifacts in European collections dating from 1785 to 1910.
“These are photos and information that have not been publicized before,” said Etpison, describing the years-long effort she and Dr. Dupont dedicated to collecting the materials from various archives across Europe. “Some of the photos were placed under different places, not Palau,” she explained, highlighting the challenges of identifying and reclaiming historical records of Palauan people, artifacts, and places.
Reflecting on the colonial period, Etpison remarked, “Many things that colonizers did were bad, but this was one good thing that the Germans did,” referring to the photos, recordings, and collections documenting Palauan life during the German colonial era.
For some, the books provide more than historical insight; they evoke deep personal connections. High Chief Reklai Raphael Bao Ngirmang, who accepted a set on behalf of the Palau Council of Chiefs, was visibly emotional upon seeing images of three generations of titleholders of his clan.
“We really thank these two ladies for the wonderful work they have done. We would not have these important historical records if not for them,” said High Chief Reklai. He added that the books would serve as valuable resources for schools and shared plans to procure additional copies for the Office of the Council of Chiefs.
The two-volume set is available locally at the Belau National Museum, Etpison Museum, and major department stores, including WCTC and Surangel & Sons. While the books cannot be ordered online due to high shipping costs, Dr. Dupont encouraged local buyers to send copies to friends and relatives overseas as gifts. Priced at $45, the set offers an affordable and meaningful way to preserve and share Palauan history.
