November 21, 2016 (Ngerulmud) Senate Joint Resolution 9-86 honoring the late former Senator Merol Ngirmeriil passed both houses of OEK during the 29th Special Session of the 9th Olbiil Era Kelulau.

The resolution highlighted late former Senator Merol Ngirmeriil’s accomplishments over the years and his contributions to his state of Koror and Palau as a whole.

According to the resolution, Ngirmeriil dedicated his life to public service in his early years, serving as a police officer from 1971 to 1991. During that period his career as police officer included becoming Fire Crew Supervisor, Chief of Division of Fire Protection and Chief of Division of Corrections.

From 1991 to 1992, he was elected as a member of the Senate of the Third Olbiil Era Kelulau.  After that he served his State of Koror as a legislator from 8th to the 9th Koror State Legislature.

Late former Senator Merol Ngirmeriil also held a traditional title of Iyechad ra Derbei of Ngermid hamlet of Koror State until his death.

He was active in the community and served as President of Belau Boaters Association, member of Steba Anglers and Belau Bikers Association.

According to the resolution, among his many favorite hobbies, he was most of all an avid fisherman.

Iyechad ra Derbei Merol Ngirmeriil is survived by his wife Lydia Wong Ngirmeriil, his children and siblings.

The resolution states that the loss of late former Senator Merol Ngirmeriil is not only monumental to his family but also to the Senate, the House and the entire Republic of Palau. [/restrict]
