November 15, 2016 (Koror) Senate bill 9-188, to extend the life of Land Court did not die in the Senate as erroneously reported in the November 15th issue of this paper. The bill was rejected in the 3rd reading in the Senate and went to Conference Committee of both houses of OEK.
The conference committee made up of members of JGA Committees of both House and the Senate met to discuss their differences early this week and majority agreed to remove the amendments added by House of Delegates. Proposed amendments to re-open dismissed land claims due to untimely claims and opening new public land claims were removed.
The language agreed by the majority of conferees extended the life of the Land Court indefinitely, and restored its ability to hear claims and make land ownership determinations.
Senate is expected to hold session on Monday to adopt the Conference Committee Report and the bill as amended. [/restrict]
