Ministry of Justice included in its performance report to Olbiil Era Kelulau the number of vehicles processed and registered in 2021 and 2022. The report showed 8619 vehicles registered in 2021 and 9,559 in 2022, a nearly thousand vehicles difference.
The report does not speculate on the cause of the increase in registered vehicles, but it may be assumed that the re-opening of borders after COVID-19 may have contributed to the increase.
The number of traffic and criminal citations declined in 2022 compared to 2021. In 2021, 684 traffic citations were issued, and in 2022, only 221. For criminal citations, also 209 in 2021 and 75 in 2022.
The same trend is seen in a number of crimes vs. person cases and cases filed under the Family Protection Act. Crimes vs. person cases saw 131 in 2021 and 49 in 2022. For Family Protection Act, 62 in 2021 and 20 in 2022.
Vice President Uduch Sengebau-Senior said that the decline in reported crimes and citations in 2022 might be attributed to many other activities, such as Our Ocean Conference in 2022.
The decline in the number of Family Protection Act reports, and incidents are also attributed to many other activities happening in Palau in 2022 but also due to an aggressive public campaign on the Family Protection Act.
