SUVA, 19 JUNE 2017 (PIFS)—The Pacific Islands Forum has accepted an invitation from the Government of Papua New Guinea to observe the 2017 National Elections.



A Forum Electoral Observer Team arrive in Papua New Guinea this week to begin the work of monitoring and assessing the pre-polling environment ahead of the polling which will take place between June 24th and July 8th.


Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor said the Forum was pleased to accept the invitation from the Government of Papua New Guinea. “Good governance and the full observance of democratic values lie at the heart of the Pacific region we strive for. Electoral missions like this are an important way of strengthening our processes and ensuring we continue to uphold these values.”


The Forum Team will comprise Taeasi Sanga, Electoral Commissioner of the Solomon Islands; Joseph Cain, Electoral Commissioner of Nauru; and Pita Vuki, the Electoral Commissioner of Tonga. The mission will be supported by staff from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
