KOROR, Palau – Palau is bringing its voice to the global stage on climate mobility as President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. participated in the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum in Germany on June 18, 2026.
During the forum, Whipps joined other heads of state in delivering opening remarks, emphasising the urgency of addressing climate-driven displacement and its impacts on vulnerable nations. The event, co-hosted by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, convened governments, international organizations, financial institutions and civil society leaders to advance cooperation and support shared Climate Mobility Principles.
For Palau and other Pacific island nations, the issue is immediate. Whipps underscored that climate mobility is already affecting communities across the region, pointing to rising sea levels, king tides, coral bleaching, extreme heat and shifting rainfall patterns that are disrupting livelihoods, cultural practices and water security.
Palau’s position centers on protecting the right of its people to remain on their ancestral lands while also advocating for safe, orderly and dignified mobility options when relocation becomes necessary. Leaders highlighted the importance of increased investment in local adaptation, community-driven solutions and safeguards for the rights of affected populations.
Palau continues to call for stronger international collaboration to turn global commitments into practical action, with a focus on resilience, solidarity and long-term support for communities facing climate impacts.
