, Palau —President Surangel Whipps Jr. signed the National Water Policy on Dec. 4, 2024 aimed at ensuring sustainable water resource management and improving access to clean water and sanitation services across Palau. The policy addresses critical challenges, including water security, climate change, and equitable service delivery, with an emphasis on underserved communities.
The policy was developed through an inclusive, collaborative process involving two specialized committees. The Water Resources Management Committee focused on sustainable water governance, integrated water management, climate resilience, and ecological preservation. Meanwhile, the Water Supply and Sanitation Committee tackled infrastructure improvement, universal access to safe drinking water, and sanitation services, prioritizing solutions for vulnerable populations.
Through extensive consultations and stakeholder engagement, the committees aligned their findings to create a unified framework. The resulting National Water Policy integrates ecological and social considerations, ensuring its alignment with Palau’s broader development goals.

The policy’s development involved key stakeholders, including the Palau Energy and Water Administration, World Bank, Palau Conservation Society, and other local and international partners. It represents a concerted effort to build resilience against climate-related challenges and enhance public health outcomes.
Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) extended its gratitude to the government and collaborating agencies, highlighting their vital roles in drafting and finalizing the policy.
