Koror, Palau — “Palau is proud to be the first Pacific nation to host TaiwanPlus,” President Surangel Whipps Jr. said Wednesday, as the country officially welcomed Taiwan’s first English-language international news and programming platform to its airwaves. The launch marks TaiwanPlus’ entry into the media market of a diplomatic ally for the first time, now available nationwide on PNCC Digital TV Channel 55.
Operated by Taiwan Public Television Service (PTS) since 2021, TaiwanPlus offers daily news, documentaries, talk shows, and programs covering culture, travel, cuisine, technology, and music. The platform aims to share Taiwan’s stories globally in English while promoting democracy, freedom, and cultural exchange.
The expansion into Palau adds a range of new programming to PNCC’s lineup, providing viewers with access to international news, lifestyle shows, and cultural content that showcases Taiwan’s vibrant society.
The launch was made possible through a partnership between PNCC and TaiwanPlus, facilitated by coordination among the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Palau, the Palau Ministry of State, PTS, and PNCC, with strong backing from Chairman Stan Shih, senior economic advisor to President Whipps.
The ceremony in Koror was attended by President Whipps, Ambassador Jessica Lee, PNCC CEO Simon Fraser, and representatives from PTS. Pre-recorded congratulatory messages were delivered by PTS Chairman Hu Yu-Ming and Chairman Shih.
Ambassador Lee highlighted the strategic and cultural importance of the launch. “This achievement not only underscores Taiwan’s growing presence on the international stage, it also strengthens the foundation for information and cultural exchange between our nations,” she said.
PNCC CEO Simon Fraser called the partnership a milestone for Palau’s digital and cultural connectivity. “This is a very exciting time for PNCC and for all of Palau, as we connect to TaiwanPlus. TaiwanPlus enables PNCC to expand on our mission—‘Connecting Palau to the world’—and we are grateful for this collaboration,” Fraser said.
The launch provides Palau residents with access to global news and Taiwan’s cultural offerings in their own homes.
