The National Congress of Palau is pleased to announce the generous contribution of USD 25,000 from Taiwan to support the 4th Conference of the Pacific Islands Parliaments Group (PIPG). The conference, scheduled to take place in Palau from August 14 to 16, 2024, will focus on the theme “Human Development in Oceania: How Can Legislatures Strengthen People-Centered Security for the Pacific Islanders?”

This significant event marks the first time PIPG will convene in one of the Northern Pacific countries, bringing together 18 member legislatures. Additionally, the legislatures of the Association of Pacific Islands Legislatures (APIL), composed of North Pacific legislatures, have been invited as observers.

In the current global context, characterized by increased challenges in Pacific States, this initiative is essential for reinforcing regional unity and addressing common challenges. The conference aims to foster dialogue, collaboration, and collective action among Pacific Island legislatures, ensuring that the voices and interests of Pacific Islanders are represented and protected.

This contribution comes in addition to the assistance provided by the government of Japan, who has generously funded most of the conference through the Strengthening Legislatures in the Pacific Islands countries (SLIP) project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

The Speaker of the House of Delegate, the Hon. Sabino Anastacio and the President of the Senate, the Hon. Hokkons Baules expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s support, stating, “We are deeply grateful for the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s contribution. This support not only helps us in some of the logistical aspects of the conference but also symbolizes the strong and enduring partnership between Palau and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

It is a testament to our shared commitment to promoting stability, prosperity, and

sustainable development in the Pacific region”.

The National Congress of Palau looks forward to a successful and impactful conference, bringing together legislators from across the Pacific to address shared challenges and opportunities. We are confident that this event will pave the way for stronger cooperation and solidarity among our nations.
