Public schools in Palau began a new school year on Wednesday, following the year-round school calendar. This contrasts with private schools, which are resuming classes after a summer break.

Palau High School (PHS), the only public high school in the country, is currently in its drop-and-add period, which ends tomorrow. This allows students to finalize their course selections. According to a staff member from the PHS Registrar’s office, the final enrollment numbers will be available next week.

At Koror Elementary School (KES), one of the two largest public elementary schools in Palau, there are 16 new kindergarten students, 10 transfer students, and 54 first graders. Of the first graders, 30 are new students, while 24 are continuing from KES’ kindergarten program.

George B. Harris Elementary School, the other large public elementary school, reports roughly 50 new students. According to the school secretary, enrollment has remained relatively steady, with no significant increase or decrease.

Private schools in Palau are starting at different times: Mindzenty High School on August 1, Emmaus-Bethania on August 12, and Belau Modekngei School began this week on Monday. (By: Olkeriil Eoghan Ngirudelsang)
