Palau discussed various issues with Rear Admiral Greg Huffman, Commander of Joint Task Force-Micronesia, at the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii on March 27-28.
The focus was on the U.S. commitment to security and defense in Palau. As the Department of Defense noted, this biannual meeting strengthens the partnership between the two nations. Huffman stated,
“The United States and the Republic of Palau share a deep partnership based on respect and a commitment to regional security.” The meetings addressed strategies for protecting Palau’s sovereignty, territory, and critical infrastructure against external threats.
According to the Department of Defense website, the biannual event strengthens the partnership of both countries.
“These Joint Committee Meetings strengthen this partnership, and we are proud to collaborate with Palauan leaders to enhance our collective defense posture in order to address emerging challenges and promote a prosperous future for Palau.”
Discussions included updates on projects such as the Tactical Multi-Mission Over the Horizon Radar (TACMOR), the improvement of the Malakal Wharf, and the Guam National Guard State Partnership Program.
Plans for future collaboration with Palau’s law enforcement were also highlighted, aiming to enhance internal stability and maritime security. U.S. Ambassador to Palau Joel Ehrendreich emphasized the strength of their partnership, and President Surangel Whipps noted the importance of open communication in problem-solving.
“By working together, we strengthen regional stability, enhance opportunities for the Palauan people, and tackle global challenges as trusted partners,” stated US Ambassador to Palau Joel Ehrendreich.
“The United States remains committed to supporting Palau, and we look forward to deepening our cooperation in the coming years.”
President Surangel Whipps emphasized the importance of open communication in problem-solving.
“Over the past two days, we have had robust discussions that were very productive for both countries,” he shared. “These activities require all of us to work together, and that’s the essence of these meetings. We look forward to welcoming you in Palau and continuing the great work that our teams are achieving.
Additionally, in the same meeting in Hawaii, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth discussed his strategic vision for the Defense Department as it relates to the Indo-Pacific region,
Hegseth said the U.S. will stand with its allies and partners to deter China’s aggression.
“No one should question the resolve of the United States of America to defend our interests in the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” Hegseth said.
“We will do this through the deterrent power of the strongest, most effective, most lethal fighting force in the world … supported by — and in partnership with — capable, like-minded allies and partners,” he added.
