KOROR, Palau — As the 2026 Belau Games approach, organizers say the event’s volunteer program is doing more than simply staffing basketball competitions — it is building skills, strengthening community ties and creating pathways for young Palauans into sports careers.

“The success of our competition events completely depends on a group of talented and dedicated volunteers,” said Minelli “Bubbles” Olkeriil, tournament director. “The entire basketball competition is run by volunteers and over the years as Palau Basketball Federation continues to host the national basketball competition, we believe our volunteers directly influence the highly competitive, positive, and exciting atmosphere in the gym.”

Organizers say volunteering provides practical experience in event operations, media, officiating and logistics. “All volunteers will receive orientation and training on the different volunteer roles available,” said Jubilee Kuartei, technical director. “If youth need to track their hours, want to develop their skills for future opportunities or jobs, or need a job recommendation afterwards, they can expect that we will provide a fun and valuable experience.”

Roles range from referees, scorers and timers to venue support, game management, media and merchandise. “We have our operations and logistics teams that make sure we have a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for teams and fans,” Olkeriil said. “We have game announcers and media that keep the fans engaged and provide updates and results on our social media.”

Organizers emphasized volunteers’ long-term value to Palau’s sports ecosystem. “All successful sports teams and events rely on a diverse group of individuals who bring their own talents and interests, so we aim for volunteers not just to learn something from supporting us but to also teach others throughout the event,” said Selby Etibek, venue director. “Community members who have more experience add great value because they take initiative, see problems that need to be solved, and also help us connect to additional resources or volunteers that might be needed.”

Myers Techitong, Palau Basketball Federation representative, said the federation views the volunteer program as an investment in local talent. “We are always looking to grow our basketball community, not just with players and coaches but with event staff that have time and commitment to support our event and the Belau Games,” he said.

Marketing and media director Mia Kuartei urged interested residents to consider the program’s career benefits as well as its community role. “You don’t have to play basketball to support our event and we hope any youth who are interested in any of the volunteer areas will consider joining our team,” she said.

Volunteering is open to community members of all ages and experience levels. Training will be provided for all positions, and the federation can document volunteer hours or provide references for future opportunities.
