New Direct Service Connects Island Nation with Australia

KOROR, Palau – Officials and industry representatives gathered in Koror on Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, to celebrate the inaugural flight of the Palau Paradise Express, the first direct flight between Palau and Australia.

The ceremony at Elilai Restaurant marked a new chapter in connectivity for the island nation.

The new route, operated by Nauru Airlines under the name Palau Paradise Express, is expected to boost tourism, cargo trade, and commerce between the two countries. It also opens up new travel options for visitors from Australia, the region, and beyond.

“This flight arrives early in Palau, allowing passengers to connect with onward flights,” said Palau President Surangel Whipps, highlighting one of the benefits. The daytime arrival also provides a chance for travelers to experience Palau upon arrival, a contrast to most flights serving the island which typically operate at night.

Nauru Airlines’ Commercial Manager, James Blake, emphasized the broader significance of the route. Brisbane International Airport, the departure point in Australia, connects to 31 destinations worldwide. This new route, he said, offers travelers an alternative pathway to the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The nonstop service operates on a weekly schedule. Flights depart Brisbane on Tuesdays at 11:30 PM and arrive at Palau International Airport at 4:30 PM the following day. The return flight departs Palau on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM and arrives in Brisbane at 5:30 AM.

Introductory fares are available for both directions. “We are very keen for Australians to get here on a holiday but we are also just as keen for Palauans to get out to Australia,” said Blake.  Visitors traveling from Palau can enjoy a round-trip price of $899 USD for two passengers, essentially a “buy one, get one free” deal.

The celebratory event also featured a raffle, with five lucky individuals winning round-trip tickets to Australia. The winners included representatives from Pacific Missionary Aviation, Palau Central Hotel, Swings Tours, and Books + Business Services.
