Atlanta, Georgia – Palau is crafting its first National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) following a United Nations review that highlighted successes and improvement areas in its fight against corruption, reported Palau’s Attorney General Ernestine Rengiil in her delivery of country statement at the Tenth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption on December 12, 2023.
The UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) review, conducted in 2022, commended Palau for its open public records policy, a user-friendly online platform for anonymous corruption reporting, and an incentive program for public officials.
However, the review also identified areas for improvement, including the need for a national anti-corruption strategy, a re-established Office of the Ombudsman, and strengthened legal frameworks for procurement and public administration transparency.
In collaboration with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Attorney General’s Office has launched consultations with government, businesses, civil society, and media to develop the NACS.
This “National Integrity Dialogue” aims to formulate effective strategies for promoting good governance and tackling corruption.
Palau’s commitment extends beyond its borders. As a member of the Pacific Islands Forum, it is actively supporting the Teieniwa Vision, a regional anti-corruption framework adopted in 2021. Palau will also participate in a dedicated task force established by the Pacific Islands Forum to further the Teieniwa Vision’s goals.
“Palau remains committed to working with other UNCAC member states in our fight against corruption,” declared Palau’s Attorney General Rengiil at the recent Conference of the States Parties to UNCAC.
