WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Embassy of the Republic of Palau in Washington, D.C., has issued a Notice Alert Bulletin urging all Palauan citizens residing in the United States to verify and maintain the validity of their immigration documents under the Compact of Free Association (COFA). The advisory highlights the importance of adhering to U.S. immigration regulations to prevent legal complications.
The bulletin, issued on January 13, 2024 outlines key reminders for Palauan nationals, emphasizing their legal status under COFA, which permits them to live, work, and study in the U.S. without a visa. However, citizens are required to carry valid documentation, such as a current Palauan passport and an I-94 Arrival/Departure record, confirming lawful entry under COFA provisions.
“Compliance with U.S. immigration policies is essential to avoid potential complications,” the bulletin stated. It further noted, “It is your responsibility to maintain compliance with U.S. immigration laws to safeguard your legal residency and opportunities in the United States.”
In addition to ensuring document validity, the Embassy advises citizens to stay informed of U.S. immigration laws, report any changes in address or employment to relevant authorities, and confirm the validity of their documents before traveling internationally. The bulletin emphasized, “A valid passport and an I-94 record are critical to avoid potential complications.”
Palauan nationals seeking assistance or clarification on immigration matters are encouraged to contact the Embassy directly or consult U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for specific concerns related to I-94 records.
Ambassador Hersey Kyota underscored the importance of the advisory, stating that maintaining proper documentation is a personal responsibility for all Palauan citizens residing abroad. The Embassy’s advisory aims to foster continued compliance and prevent potential disruptions to the rights granted under the COFA agreement.
