KOROR, Palau — Taiwan has reaffirmed its commitment to Palau’s development through its annual stimulus grant, delivering $4.2 million for infrastructure improvements across the island nation. Ambassador Jessica Lee of the Republic of China (Taiwan) presented the initial drawdown check to President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. on Jan. 2, 2025, marking another milestone in the strong partnership between the two nations.

The 2024 Stimulus Grant is funding a wide array of infrastructure projects aimed at improving roads, utilities, public facilities, and sports infrastructure. Among the key initiatives are:

  • Aimeliik: Meltelatel and Mongami road improvements
  • Airai: Intersection power extension, basketball court road construction, and waterline connection projects
  • Angaur: Dock lighting and dock-airstrip facilities improvements, along with boat engine procurement
  • Hatohobei: State building enhancements
  • Koror: Road, sewer, and dock repairs, including improvements to Ngesaol Road and Short Island Dock
  • Melekeok: Ngerubesang Road upgrades
  • Ngaraard: Improvements to Elab-Ulimang and Ngkelau-Ulimang roads
  • Ngarchelong: State office building renovations
  • Ngardmau: Secondary Compact Access Road construction
  • Ngatpang: Multi-purpose center and road upgrades, including gym roofing improvements
  • Ngchesar: Repairs to Shimizu Road and slope failures, as well as Ngerngesang-Shimizu road enhancements
  • Ngeremlengui: Dispensary road and waterline improvements
  • Peleliu: Roofing for the elementary basketball court
  • National Facilities: Upgrades to the national track and field, swimming facility, and wrestling and weightlifting centers
  • Koror Community Sports Projects: Meyuns softball field and PHS Spider Gym enhancements, along with a new Echang multi-purpose gymnasium

These projects also align with preparations for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games, ensuring Palau’s facilities meet international standards for the event.

Ambassador Lee emphasized Taiwan’s dedication to supporting Palau’s national development and fostering a deeper bilateral relationship. “The government of Taiwan is pleased to assist in these vital infrastructure improvements, which reflect our enduring friendship and commitment to cooperation,” she said.

President Whipps expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s continued support, noting the grant’s vital role in advancing Palau’s development goals.
