TOKYO — “This experience is truly one for the books,” said Tyson Chinn, the lone athlete representing Palau at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. “I met so many amazing people who I now consider my track family.”

Chinn, who competed in the 100-meter event on Sept. 13 at Japan’s National Stadium, was Palau’s sole representative at the 20th edition of the world competition, held Sept. 13–21. His participation marked a milestone for the island nation’s athletics program, underscoring its growing presence on the international stage.

The 21-year-old athlete’s preparation included a 10-day training camp in Fukuoka that began Aug. 31. The camp was made possible through a partnership between the Oceania National Olympic Committee and the Fukuoka Prefectural Government. Chinn trained alongside top athletes from across the Oceania region, gaining access to expert coaching that boosted his readiness for competition.

“Although it wasn’t my personal best time, I gave it my all,” Chinn said of his race. He returned to Palau on Sept. 15 after competing, carrying lessons he hopes to share with younger athletes.

Chinn’s experience is part of the Palau National Olympic Committee’s broader efforts to invest in international training opportunities, develop local talent, and inspire youth through sports. Officials see participation in events such as the World Athletics Championships as vital steps toward building a stronger national team and achieving greater competitiveness on the world stage.

The championships, staged at the stadium rebuilt for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, brought together the world’s best athletes and gave Palau a valuable platform to showcase its athletic ambitions.
