On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, Palau Chamber of Commerce gathered a decent number of Palau’s accommodation providers and hoteliers, all of whom prefer to be known as hospitality service providers, at the Desomel Restaurant, Palasia Hotel, for a meeting as a follow-up of the recent Public Hearing on Senate Bill No. 11-15 that took place on Thursday, May 13, 2021, which was about the intricacies of the proposed Comprehensive Tax Reform legislation.
The issue at hand was the section of the proposed S.B. 11-15 on the Comprehensive Tax Reform, concerning the Occupancy Tax, the expectations and concerns regarding the impact that this proposed tax system would have on Palau’s accommodation providers and on Palau’s economy as a whole. As per the request of the Senate Ways and Means and Financial Matters Committee, the Committee in charge of Senate Bill No. 11-15, the hospitality industry representatives shared their questions, concerns and recommendations, then they will come up with a joint solution feasible for both public and private sectors of Palau, amid the current economic challenges, to be presented and submitted to the Senate WMFM Committee at the earliest.
The Palau Chamber of Commerce would like to extend the invitation to the next meeting regarding the aforementioned matters to all accommodation providers and hoteliers in Palau, from the small one-bedroom bed & breakfast small businesses all the way to the high-end hotels. PCOC encourages that it is time to work together to help our Government also to understand the intricacies of our hospitality services industry in Palau and its relations to all other industries, all of which are vital for tourism purposes as well as for investment, sustainable development, business and budget travelers.
The next meeting of all accommodation providers will be next week on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, and this time it will take place at the Palau Royal Resort, Waves Restaurant, starting approximately at 10:00 AM
