On the evening of January 18, at 6PM, the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) held its 20th Anniversary Virtual Celebration at PICRC grounds. The celebration was broadcast live by Palau National Communication Corporation (PNCC), on its YouTube channel and on channel 73 cable television, for everyone in Palau and abroad to join in. It was the first time in history for the Center to have hosted its Anniversary virtually.
Together the employees, board members, and donors celebrated the Center’s accomplishments, using videos to showcase its research work, education, and outreach with partners and collaborators. To date, over 2000 people, from Palau, the United States, and Guam, have viewed the celebration on YouTube to get informed of the Center’s work and history.
During the celebration, PICRC bid farewell to two of its dedicated members of the Board of Directors: former Minister of Finance Elbuchel Sadang and former Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Tourism (MNRET) F. Umiich Sengebau. The members of the board and PICRC staff recognized them for their dedicated service and contributions to the Center over the years.
Former Minister Sadang had been the longest member of the board, and has had helped the Center grow financially and improve its financial position. Throughout his years as a board member, former Minister Sadang helped the Center with its fundraising and financial planning to help the Center move toward a more stable financial position. One of his biggest contribution was in helping the Center secure funding needed to build the Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. (TR) building, which is now is one of the Center’s steady source of revenue.
PICRC also recognized former Minister Sengebau for his strong support and contribution to the Center’s programs. During his term as a board member, former Minister Sengebau strengthened the partnership and collaboration between the Center and MNRET, the Protected Areas Network (PAN), and other Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in the environmental sector. He provided much guidance to the Center as it prepared to take on the role as administrator of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary.
PICRC, using the occasion of their 20th Anniversary, honored and gave thanks to the two former Ministers and wished them well. PICRC is confident that both of these former board members will continue their support toward the Center, even if they are no longer board members.
