On August 09, 2019, the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) welcomed, Elsei Tellei into the Communications and Outreach Office.
Tellei is a citizen of the Republic of Palau and comes from the states of Melekeok, Airai, and Ngchesar. After graduating from Mindszenty High School, Tellei pursued an Associate of Arts in liberal Arts from Palau Community College and obtained her B.A. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii, Manoa.
At the same time, she had the opportunity to complete a Certificate in the Marine Option Program offered to non-major students that are passionate about marine science and environmental studies.
For the past year, Tellei worked at the former Palau National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS) Office as the Community Outreach and Education Officer. On June 12, 2019, a new law went into effect establishing the PNMS Office at the Palau International Coral Reef Center.
Tellei will be joining the Communications and Outreach team at the Center as they continue to work to improve awareness and education about the PNMS and our whole ocean.
“I look forward to working with PICRC on the implementation and awareness of PNMS, and learning more about the work that PICRC does as well” Tellei said.
At the same time, Tellei is no stranger to the PICRC. In 2015, she was a lab assistant for the Palau Coral Reef Island Ecosystem Project and came back to Hawaii declaring her Certificate in the Marine Option Program. “I like to think that PICRC has had an influence in my choice to pursue a career in the environment”.
The Palau International Coral Reef Center will continue to work to build its capacity in communication, outreach and research so it can successfully fulfill its new mandate, which expanded its focus from coral reefs, to the whole Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Palau and the Palau National Marine Sanctuary.
