KOROR, Palau (Oct. 17, 2024) — A recent shooting incident at the PIDC store in Topside Koror has raised concerns over public safety and highlighted challenges in obtaining timely information from the Bureau of Public Safety. The October 11 event, involving an air gun pellet that shattered the store’s glass door, has underscored the need for improved communication between law enforcement and the media, as timely reporting is critical for public awareness.

The Bureau of Public Safety’s investigation, led by Director Curtis Elobt, is ongoing, with key evidence under review. CCTV footage from PIDC and government cameras in Ngermid and Topside captured a white Toyota Alphard van suspected to be involved. The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is currently analyzing the footage to identify the vehicle’s owner.

In an October 16 press conference, President Surangel Whipps Jr. condemned the shooting, expressing support for the Bureau’s investigation. He stressed the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors, including businesses like PIDC, to ensure investigators can access footage vital to solving the case.

However, Director Elobt criticized media outlets for not verifying facts directly with the Bureau before publishing reports, calling some coverage “garbage.” He advised reporters to “call us first” for accurate information. His comments followed repeated unsuccessful attempts by the media to secure interviews with him, which he attributed to his busy schedule.

Journalists have long faced barriers in accessing timely information from government officials. Attempts to interview Elobt about his transition into the Bureau of Public Safety mirror frustrations that date back to his predecessor. Reporters argue that timely updates are crucial, particularly in matters of public safety, where delays in communication can lead to misinformation and confusion.

Balanced and transparent communication between law enforcement and the media is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring accountability. In incidents like the PIDC shooting, where public safety is at risk, swift and accurate information helps calm public concerns while supporting ongoing investigations.

Elobt has urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in closing the case. As the investigation progresses, ongoing cooperation between the Bureau of Public Safety and the media will be vital to keeping the public informed and upholding transparency.
