As announced on October 3, 2016, Palau National Communications Corporation (PNCC) is raising the rate for Digital TV Basic service, for the first time since 2005. Effective January 1, 2017, the monthly rates for the Digital TV Basic subscription and DTV outlets will increase by 10%.
The rate increase was approved as part of Tariff Advice #8 by the PNCC Board of Directors on September 21, 2016, after a public notice published on August 6, 2016, a public hearing on September 6, 2016, and an extension of the public comment period to September 20, 2016. Tariff Advice #8 also included changes for other PNCC services, including lower DSL and prepaid Internet rates that became effective October 1, 2016.
The Digital TV Basic subscription will be $27.83 per month. DTV outlets will be $3.30 each for 1-3 outlets, and $4.40 each for 4-8 outlets. The new rates will help to offset increases in fees paid to DTV channel providers.
Since the last rate increase in 2005, Palau’s TV system has been converted entirely to digital technology to improve video and audio quality, and the number of channels in the Basic line up has increased 22%, from 36 to 44 total.
PNCC will continue to negotiate with TV channel providers to try and keep programming costs at a reasonable amount and continue to offer a wide variety of channels.
Other changes in the DTV tariff effective January 1, 2017 affect the commercial advertising rates for DTV Channel 1 and the Electronic Billboard, with a 3-day minimum charge of $15 per screen and a rush fee of $10 for same day service.
