In a heartfelt reflection of her political journey, a long-time candidate for Ngaremlengui State, Portia Franz Kesolei, expressed her deep commitment to public service and the lessons learned along the way. “My dedication to serve Ngaremlengui has never wavered,” she shared. “When I set my mind to something, I want to see it through to the end. I want to succeed.”
After facing defeat in four consecutive elections to the House of Delegates as Ngeremlengui’s representative, delegate-elect Portia Franz’s resilience and determination finally paid off when she secured victory in her fifth attempt in 2024. She ran against a four-term delegate Swenny Ongidobel in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
Her commitment to her community and persistent advocacy for the issues that matter most to her constituents ultimately earned her the trust and support needed to succeed.
Reflecting on her journey, the candidate emphasized the importance of perseverance. “The lessons I’ve learned from my losses are clear: never give up, stay focused, and stay true to your values,” she noted. “Running for office is demanding, and many people will try to offer advice or steer you in different directions, but it’s crucial to stay grounded in your faith and your goals.”
After years of effort, the candidate expressed a sense of fulfillment in their victory. “I didn’t know exactly how to react to my win, but I know it’s about time. I worked hard, and I truly deserve it. It feels really sweet. The journey was all worth it.”
A supporter of Portia Franz praised her dedication and hard work, recognizing her commitment to serving Ngaremlengui. “She showed her care for the state and worked tirelessly, always believing in its potential,” she shared. The supporter highlighted Franz’s role as an inspiring figure for Palau’s youth, demonstrating persistence and resilience in her journey. “I’m glad she finally won.”
Ngeremlengui State will be the first state of Palau to have a woman delegate and a woman governor.
