President Tommy Remengesau offered the Republic of Palau’s condolences to Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui, who died at the age of 98 on July 30th in Taipei.
“On behalf of the people and government of Palau, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the people of Taiwan and the family of Former President Lee Teng-hui on his passing at the age of 98.” said President Remengesau.
Dr. Lee Teng-hui, the late President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) served as Taiwan’s President from 1988 to 2000. He oversaw Taiwan’s transition to democracy, including winning its first democratic presidential elections in 1996. Leading Taiwan to vibrant Democracy, he established diplomatic relationship with Palau.
“ During his tenure, when I was serving as Vice-President to President Nakamura, our two countries established diplomatic relations on 29 December 1999. In the two decades since, our political, economic and cultural ties have flourished. Our deepest sympathies go out to the people of Taiwan in mourning one of Asia’s champions of democracy” said President Remengesau.
