On Wednesday, December 21, 2022, His Excellency President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. along with Minister of Finance Kaleb Udui Jr. visited the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (BCBP) at their Main Office at Malakal. The BCBP Director, John Tarkong Jr. introduced the employees to the President and gave him a tour of the office facility. The President greeted and met with the Officers and employees to determine the readiness of the PGST being implemented effective January 01, 2022. Both the President and Minister were able to talk to the officers about concerns and questions they had in regards to the upcoming implementation of the PGST and whether they were ready to move forward with the tax reform changes.

According to the staff, Customs is ready to implement and collect the PGST on imports effective January 01, 2022 provided that Webplus, our IT Provider, is able to make the final changes into the system and have the entry forms ready for importers to use. The Director also expressed the need to move forward with plans to build a new office and warehouse facility. At the end, a group photo was taken to commemorate the visit and recognize Reuben Ngirakesau, Customs Officer III, who after 32 years of service, will retire in January of next year.
