KOROR, Palau (Aug. 31, 2026) – One of Palau’s most prominent businessmen, former legislator and traditional leader, Rechesengel Ignacio Anastacio, died Saturday morning in the Philippines, according to sources close to his family. He was in his mid-70s.

Anastacio was the titlebearer of Rechesengel, the second-highest traditional chiefly title in Ngchesar State.

He was also a prominent figure in Palau’s business community, owning some of the prime real estate in Koror, particularly properties stretching from Medalaii to Ikelau. Much of his business activity was focused on real estate and commercial space rentals.

Anastacio also had a long record of public service. He served in the Palau Congress’ House of Delegates from 1981 to 2000 and was appointed floor leader and later speaker during his tenure.

His death leaves a significant vacancy in Ngchesar’s traditional leadership. The state currently has neither of its two highest traditional chiefs in place.

The appointment of Ngirakebou, Ngchesar’s highest traditional chief, remains pending as clan matriarchs continue the process of selecting a successor. With Anastacio’s death, the state’s second-highest chiefly position is also vacant.

Anastacio is survived by his wife and children.

Family members are making arrangements to return his remains to Palau. No specific date for his return has been announced.
