President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. issued a presidential proclamation to mandate Palauans to display Palau’s flag at half-mast on May 15 to honor police officers who had passed away in the line of duty.
Remengesau, through presidential proclamation no. 18-233, declares May 15 as a National Day of Remembrance.
The declaration is in line with the celebration of the Police Week from May 13 to 19.
It also cited that 1 PNC § 503(c) gives the President the power to establish procedures for displaying the flag at half-mast, and Executive Order No. 292 sets forth those procedures.
“As a symbol of national respect and mourning, ‘the flag is to be displayed at half-mast according to the instructions or orders of the President’”, Section 3 of Executive Order No. 292 states.
“The Government of the Republic of Palau wishes to express its deep respect for those police officers who have passed away in the line of duty, and to convey the appreciation of a grateful nation,” the proclamation reads.
