President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. was invited as the keynote speaker for the first Global Green Island Summit (GGSI)slated in Jeju, South Korea on August 27-28.
Remengesau was invited by the Governor of Hawai’i David Ige, in a letter, to join the first GGSI, an initiative that was enacted at the World Conservation Congress in 2016 among Governor Ige, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Governor Won Hee-ryong, and Okinawa Prefecture Governor Onaga Takeshi.
In his letter to Remengesau, Ige cited the initiatives of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) where President Remengesau is one of the leaders, expressing their plans to work with GLISPA to address challenges faced by the island subnational governments.
GGIS is a conference for subnational governments to share their visions on environment and seek solutions anchored on sustainable development. Discussions in the summit will revolve around environmental issues.
“We hope to work through mutual cooperation on issues of great importance, such as clean energy, sustainable development, and island resilience,” the letter reads. (Rhealyn C. Pojas)
