Mindszenty High School (MHS) students in Koror, Palau, agree that sports are a crucial part of their lives, offering not only physical benefits but also valuable lessons that extend far beyond the playing field.

According to recent MHS student interviews, sports participation contributes significantly to young people’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. MHS students echoed these sentiments, highlighting how sports have boosted their self-esteem, communication skills, and mental health.

“Sometimes I have bad days and playing ball helps,” said Yashiro Smau, an MHS senior. “Sports help me focus on the positive things and forget the negative things.” Smau added that sportsmanship and teamwork are key takeaways from his athletic experience.

Lewis Ngirkelau, another MHS senior and captain of the boy’s volleyball team, emphasized the importance of communication and respect on the court. “Sports helps us youth work on communication with different age levels,” Ngirkelau said. “Respect is a main focus on the court.”

For MHS freshman Kltang Rudolph, sports provided a sense of belonging and motivation. “I didn’t really like school, but participating in sports has changed that for me,” Rudolph said. “[Sports] motivate me to keep practicing and to get better at it.”

The students also acknowledged challenges faced by young athletes in Palau, including limited resources and opportunities. They encouraged increased support for youth sports programs and expressed a desire for more competition outside of Palau.
