In a significant move to bolster security, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has generously donated $9,624.34 to Palau’s Bureau of Public Safety and the Ministry of Justice. This funding is earmarked for the installation of CCTV cameras and a monitoring system at the Division of Corrections facility, a critical upgrade aimed at addressing ongoing safety challenges.

The Division of Corrections, which on average houses around 70 inmates daily and is managed by a staff of 4-5 officers per shift, has long faced difficulties due to inadequate camera coverage in certain areas of the facility. This lack of surveillance has posed a significant challenge for officers in effectively monitoring the premises and ensuring safety for all. The planned CCTV system promises to extend coverage to main areas, significantly enhancing the ability to safeguard inmates and staff alike.
This development comes particularly timely following a recent security incident where an inmate managed to escape, partly due to the existing surveillance gaps. The upgrade is expected to fortify security, allowing comprehensive monitoring of the entire facility, including previously unobserved corners and sections.
Vice President J. Uduch Sengebau Senior expressed profound gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for responding positively to their funding request. He highlighted Taiwan’s consistent support, reflected in various agreements and exchanges aimed at strengthening public safety. Taiwan’s commitment to aiding Palau’s public safety initiatives is well-established, with previous contributions including support for the fire department and police force.
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Palau, Jessica Lee, emphasized the ongoing nature of this partnership, assuring that Taiwan’s support for the Ministry of Justice is a continuing commitment.
This donation by Taiwan is not just a gesture of goodwill but a testament to the strong bilateral relations and shared commitment to public safety and justice between the two nations. The upgraded security measures at the Division of Corrections are a significant step in ensuring a safer environment for both the staff and inmates, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing security vulnerabilities within the correctional system.
