Koror, Palau (June 8, 2026) — For many Palauans, Taiwan’s longstanding partnership is not just a matter of diplomacy, but one that shapes everyday life through opportunities in education, healthcare, and economic development.

The visit of Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim this week has brought renewed attention to the direct benefits Palauan communities have experienced over more than 25 years of cooperation. From scholarships to infrastructure projects, the relationship continues to influence the country’s growth and the future of its people.

President Surangel Whipps Jr. welcomed Hsiao with a series of events that highlighted both Palau’s natural beauty and its historical legacy. The leaders visited the Rock Islands, including the renowned Big Drop Off, and later traveled to Peleliu to pay respects at the grave of former President Kuniwo Nakamura.

While the visit reflects strong diplomatic ties, its impact is most visible at the community level. A Palauan college student described how these partnerships are creating real opportunities for young people.

“Taiwan has supported Palau in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which directly benefit our communities,” she said. “As a college student, I’ve seen how partnerships like this can create opportunities for young people.”

She pointed to education as one of the most significant areas of impact, noting its role in shaping Palau’s future workforce and leadership.

“I believe education will have the greatest long-term impact,” she said. “Investing in education helps build the next generation of leaders, professionals, and innovators.”

For many students, access to scholarships and international programs has expanded their horizons while strengthening their ability to contribute back home. The student said the vice president’s visit could lead to even more opportunities.

“I think Vice President Hsiao’s visit could open doors for more scholarships, student exchanges, training programs, and economic opportunities that help Palauan youth gain skills and experiences that we can bring back home,” she said.

As global attention on the Pacific increases, Palau’s relationship with Taiwan also plays a strategic role in supporting national priorities while maintaining shared values.

“Strengthening ties with Taiwan helps ensure that Palau has trusted partners that support our goals and respect our values,” she said. “For young Palauans, it creates opportunities for education, cultural exchange, and professional development.”

Vice President Hsiao, during her visit, emphasized the broader significance of the partnership.

“Taiwan and Palau will work together to show the world that we are indispensable forces for good on the international stage,” she said.
