The Silent Majority

Dear Editor,

In the heart of the Pacific, on our small but proud islands, something extraordinary happened this year. The 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau were more than just a sporting event, they were a living testament to who we are as a people: resilient, generous, and bound by a love for our home that transcends hardship.

Today, we rise together to offer our deepest congratulations and gratitude to Team Palau, our athletes, our champions, our coaches and our ambassadors. Your dedication, discipline, and strength inspired not only the youth who cheered for you in the stands and online but also reminded all of us of what it means to carry the hopes of a nation on your shoulders.

Whether you returned home with gold, silver, or bronze, or simply gave your all in competition, you have given something far greater: pride, purpose, and proof that Palau can stand tall in the Pacific and the world. But this story is not only about the medals. It’s about the meaning.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our leaders and the organizing committee, who made this event possible with the resources we had. We know it wasn’t easy. We expected about 1,500 athletes, coaches and fans, but we got about 2,000 who came. We were stretched thin, but we did not break. Instead, we came together. Like the way the voice of the village rises in unity, each part of our community responded, with creativity, commitment, and care.

From the mayors and liaisons who worked around the clock to ensure our guests were guided and cared for, to the cooks who fed athletes, the drivers who kept everyone moving, the police officers who ensured safety, the artists and cultural performers who showcased our soul, and the vendors at the makit who offered not only products but stories of our land, this was an effort by the whole country.

We also thank all the workers who kept venues and restrooms clean, often unseen but never unnoticed, who ensured that our guests experienced a clean and welcoming environment. To the tournament directors, coaches, volunteers, and families, your behind-the-scenes labor was the real infrastructure that held this historic event together. What we offered the region was not just games, it was genuine hospitality, that rooted spirit of omengull and klechibelau that says: you are welcome here, not just as a guest, but as kin. All across the Pacific, visitors said the same thing: “Palau was the best host we’ve ever experienced.”

We take those words with humility and with honor. Yes, we were short on supplies, but we were rich in heart. Yes, things were not perfect, but our response was powerful. That is the Palauan way. And yes, we are critical of ourselves and that’s okay. We should be. That’s how we learn. That’s how we strengthen what’s weak, correct what’s broken, and plan better for next time. Our self-criticism is not division; it’s a cultural mechanism for excellence. It’s part of what makes Palau the place that it is: honest, brave, and always improving.

So to all who carried the torch of this Mini Games, from athletes to volunteers to everyday citizens who smiled at strangers and gave up their parking spots, you are the true champions. Kom Kmal Mesaul.

May the Almighty bless each of you and your families. May this moment be remembered not just for who won what, but for what we all gave, and how we stood together.

God bless Palau and all its people.

Your Humble Servant
