KOROR, Palau — On Sept. 25, 2025, a handover ceremony was held at Ksau Motors where the U.S. government donated three customized vehicles to Palau’s Division of Transnational Crime Unit’s K9 Unit. The event was attended by Minister Olegeriil and Director Elobt, who expressed deep appreciation to the U.S. government representative.
A brief demonstration on the vehicles’ operations followed the ceremony. The vehicles—three 2024 Toyota Highlanders—were specially outfitted to transport service dogs safely and comfortably. In addition to standard air conditioning, the vehicles include temperature controls and fans to maintain optimal cooling for the service dogs during transit.
Ministry of Justice statement highlighted the significance of the donation: “The handover of these assets is reflective of Palau and the U.S.’s joint commitment to policing and the detection of illicit drugs and contraband at Palau’s borders, other points of entry and areas of interest.
Ministry of Justice detailed the operational responsibilities tied to the handover: “The official handover involved vehicles provided by the United States to strengthen the K9 Unit of the Bureau of Public Safety, with full responsibility for the management and operation of both the vehicles and the dogs placed under Detective Lieutenant and Kennel Master A. Emiliano.”
The K9 Unit currently comprises six highly trained service dogs and four handlers who have undergone professional training and certification to manage, deploy, and care for the dogs across various law enforcement environments.
MOJ stressed the broader impact of the handover: “This handover not only enhances the capacity of the K9 Unit but also reflects the ongoing partnership and support from the United States in building Palau’s security and law enforcement capabilities.”
